Lukas Weithas (born 1991 in Harare; lives in Lauterach) works at the intersection of sculpture, installation and performance. Drawing on his experiences as an alpine herdsman and cowherd, he explores rural aesthetics as vehicles for social codes and mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. At the heart of his work lie tensions between belonging and alienation, whereby he raises questions of cultural identity, authenticity and their underlying norms through the alienation of traditional forms and practices. A key focus of his recent work is on festival culture as a state of exception: a collective moment in which the tension between the individual and the community dissolves in a frenzy. His works oscillate between standstill and activation – performative sculptures in which the festival lingers or is only just beginning, often condensed into forms of historically evolved festival furnishings. 

The artist’s work has been presented in Austria and internationally. In Austria, he has realized solo presentations at Kunstverein Kollektiv (2020), Kunstraum L201 (2024), Galerie Vor-Ort (2024/25), and the Skulpturgarten Margareten in Vienna (2024/25). Internationally, his practice has been showcased in solo exhibitions in Zurich at Beletage Art Space (2023/24), in Porto at Galeria do Sol (2024), and in Natz-Schabs at Showroom Zingerle Group (2025). His work has further been included diverse group exhibitions, among others at Galerie Durchgang Basel during Kunsttage Basel (2025) and at Sismografo Art Space Porto (2026). By the end of 2026, his practice will be further expanded through a presentation at Bregenz Biennale, a residency in Genua at Palazzo Bronzo, followed by a solo show at Amanda Art Space. His works are held in the collections of the State of Vorarlberg, illwerke vkw and City of Bregenz.

Weithas studied (a.o.) Agriculture and Alpine Farming at BSBZ Hohenems (14 – 16), Transmedia Art with a focus on Social Practice at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (17 – 19; M.A.) and Pioneering in Arts, Media & the Creative Industries / Arts and Culture Management at Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen (19 – 21; M.A.). From July 23 till June 25 he has been curating the exhibition format DOCK 20 life, which presented experimental positions from the fields of performance, dance, choreography and music at DOCK 20 – Kunstraum und Sammlung Hollenstein / Lustenau.
