Lukas Weithas (*1991 in Harare, lives and works in Porto and Bregenz) works across sculpture, installation, and performance. His artistic practice engages with rural aesthetics, tent and festival culture, and the social structures that manifest within them. Weithas understands festivals and their spatial, material, and performative conditions as social situations in which community, belonging, identity, and mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion emerge, are negotiated, and become visible. He is particularly interested in notions of cultural authenticity and originality, as well as in the social forms through which these notions are produced and represented. By connecting art-historical references with contemporary forms, traditional visual languages are deconstructed and reconstructed and transferred into new contexts.

His work has been exhibited in Austria at, among others, Kunstraum L201 Studenzen, Künstlerhaus Bregenz, Galerie Hinterland, and Kunstverein Fortuna in Vienna, as well as internationally in Zurich (Beletage Art Space), Basel (Galerie Durchgang), Porto (Galeria do Sol, Sismografo Art Space), and at the showroom of RUKU1952 (inventor of beer tent furniture) in Natz-Schabs, South Tyrol. In 2026, Weithas will participate in PARALLEL Vienna with an Artist Statement. In November 2026, he will undertake an art residency at Palazzo Bronzo in Genoa, followed by a solo exhibition at Amanda Art Space. From September 2026, he will be a PhD student in Visual Arts at FBAUP – Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto, where he will further develop his artistic practice and practice-based research into festival culture, social structures, and forms of collective gathering. In January 2027, an exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bregenz will follow, with an exhibition at Teodoro W. Art Space in Porto in spring 2027.
